Redefining Food Supply Chain Traceability and Trust

Leveraging Hedera DLT, AI, and IoT for Enhanced Traceability, Trust, and Efficiency of the Global Food Supply Chain

Client Profile:

A leading supplier of  equipment for food quality assessment that allows rapid, integrated non-invasive analysis of agricultural commodities such as grains, spices, milk, and tea.

Client Profile:

A leading supplier of  equipment for food quality assessment that allows rapid, integrated non-invasive analysis of agricultural commodities such as grains, spices, milk, and tea.

Challenge

Traditional processes in the global food supply chain rely on manual and subjective quality inspections, making it difficult to ensure consistent standards and traceability from farm to fork. Transactions are often inefficient and opaque, with fragmented interactions among stakeholders such as processors, exporters, labs, logistics providers, and government agencies. This fragmentation leads to challenges in verifying product quality, resolving disputes, and accessing financial services, ultimately undermining trust and efficiency across the food ecosystem.

Solution

The project modernizes food supply chain quality assurance and traceability by replacing manual, subjective inspections and fragmented handoffs with a single, shared source of truth. It digitizes key events — from testing and certification through logistics, warehousing, and settlement — and anchors objective quality/quantity data (captured via IoT devices and validated with AI) on Hedera’s tamper-resistant distributed ledger. This creates consistent, auditable records across processors, exporters, labs, logistics providers, and regulators, improving transparency, reducing friction, and enabling faster resolution of discrepancies.

Business Outcomes

By digitizing and automating supply chain processes on Hedera DLT, the solution delivers enhanced efficiency, reduced costs, and verifiable trust for all participants. It aims to support significant transaction volumes, with projected gross value processed on the platform reaching $7.5–8 billion in 3 years post-launch.

Technical Solution Overview

The solution leverages Hedera Hashgraph distributed ledger technology (DLT) to deliver a secure, tamper-resistant, and transparent record of every transaction in the food supply chain, from commodity purchases and logistics to inspections, warehousing, and financial services.

Quality and quantity data are captured at each supply chain node using advanced devices and AI algorithms, then anchored to Hedera’s ledger for immutable record-keeping. The platform supports smart contracts and finance-as-a-service (FaaS), enabling efficient sourcing, inventory management, and automated dispute resolution.

By digitizing and automating processes, it ensures end-to-end traceability, objective quality verification, and seamless integration for all stakeholders, ultimately facilitating transparent and trustworthy global food trade.

Unlike traditional blockchains, Hedera’s unique Hashgraph consensus algorithm provides high throughput, low latency, and predictable transaction fees, making it ideal for complex, high-volume supply chain environments.
